Drive for Show...My Golf Page...
My Grandpa
Manson used to say that you're either a fisherman, or you're a golfer, but
you can never be both. They are two classes of people. Some guys will get
out on a weekend and chase a little white ball around, "But that's
not for me," he would comment. Nope, it was much more enjoyable to
be out on the river in the fresh air hauling in a pile of perch and having
a good feed of it at the end of the day. True enough, but I've broken the
rule Grandpa! I think I still have my fisherman's touch, even though I play
a bit of golf.
I started golfing I guess about six years ago, but the number of games that
I play from year-to-year varies depending on where I am and whether it's
a move summer or not. So...this summer happily installed in Ottawa and with
gf working on the weekends, I decided to try and get out once per week.
I joined the NDHQ Golf
Association and have been out three times so far. The NDHQ GA is a great
deal - for $145 you can golf at a number of courses around the city and
each round only costs $15 instead of $35 or more. So, if I do the math (somebody
else did the math), you get your money back in 6-7 rounds.
What amazes me about the game of golf is that it is so darn difficult (one
of these years I WILL get some lessons), but also that it's such great exercise.
Playing a round is extremely refreshing and I find myself in good spirits
and energized afterwards. And it's heaven to sit down with a coffee or a
beer afterwards and enjoy the rest of the day. Oh, and I've decided that
this is the year that I will break 100. So now out on the golf course I
take my Grandpa Turnbull's advice. He used to say: "Get on the green
in regulation, you're doing well." It's so true! I try to concentrate
and I know I'm going to be alright if I get on the green in the designated
number of shots. After that I just hope to avoid yet another three-putt!
